01:38:05
she highlights on really important points

01:38:15
thank you laura

01:46:20
not only have we talk to them, but much more listen to them und then do what they are saying.

01:47:39
I agree Barbara - sometimes adults will listen to children then not act on their ideas because it is 'too complicated'. It should never be too complicated to do the right thing for children!

01:48:21
yes, exactly. or we adults just think they are wrong….

01:49:06
Or because they are just paying lip service @Gareth

01:49:39
@Chris - exactly! That's why the Influence part of Laura's model is so crucial

01:50:35
Laura that was BRILLIANT - THANK YOU!!!!!!

01:50:38
Fantastic talk Laura - thank you so much! :-)

01:50:38
An excellent presentation!

01:50:48
When Laura mentioned the lack of privacy for teens , for example for their medical appointments, it let me thinking at the French movie "The Belier family', with all deaf but the 16 years old daughter who has to be the interpreter for their parents with the gynecologist. Also kids of disabled parents or siblings are exposed to a lot of pressure.

01:50:59
bravo Laura ! huge applause here

01:51:13
So very valuable, thank you Laura <3 I have listened to you before at a conference in Iceland some years back :)

01:51:21
Very clear and powerful presentation, many thanks Laura!

01:51:48
You are right Manuela, touches my heart

02:00:04
bravo daniela

02:00:56
Bravissima Daniela!

02:01:31
Examples of EU "hard law" about accessibility :Web Accessibility Directive - all public sector websites need to be accessible as from Sep 2020, and all public sector apps from next June. we must review this law by mid-2022, and there will be a public consultation on this next year.

02:01:49
Bravo Daniela! I will share your message with my niece Jayda, in California.

02:02:18
I think we all feel like Daniela…

02:02:36
Thank you for sharing Daniela!

02:06:35
Session recordings and a Forum report will be made available in due course at www.betterinternetforkids.eu/sif

02:06:39
The AudioVisual Media Services Directive : Article 7Member States shall ensure, without undue delay, that services provided by media service providers undertheir jurisdiction are made continuously and progressively more accessible to persons with disabilities throughproportionate measures.

02:09:05
Glad to say that the revamped BIK portal https://www.betterinternetforkids.eu/en/ now has improved accessibility feature, including a better structure for screenreaders as Joao mentioned! Please check it out, and send us your feedback. Thanks to all the team - and a reminder to everyone that simple steps can make a HUGE impact on making content accessible or not

02:09:05
Joao you have been very brave and patient, but the result was worth the effort! As June is mentioning we are hoping that the new EU legislation and its implementation at national level will make easier to everybody to enjoy life in digital age

02:10:13
Thanks Daniela and Joel to share your experinces and ideas with us! :-)

02:12:02
The European Accessibility Act is now being out into practice. There is a long transition period, with deadline of 2025, but by then most basic services must be digitally accessible - like ATMs, smartphones & computers, travel services (buying tickets), banking services etc.

02:15:15
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/project/project-tokyo/

02:16:58
Do children or carers present have particular comments on games or types of digital content for young people that are not easily accessible - or any ones to praise that are super easy to use ?

02:20:45
So important that we have our SICs, and their helplines to advise and offer help to young people re digital safety

02:29:46
Hi @June - I know a lot of blind gamers are praising a game Called “The Last Of Us Part ll”

02:31:38
@June - although it adds extra expense, the Xbox adaptive controller has really transformed gaming for a lot of gamers with a range of disabilities: https://www.xbox.com/en-GB/accessories/controllers/xbox-adaptive-controller

02:32:40
@Chris Yes - I was talking to ISFE, and they mentioned that game which is rated "mature" ? Interesting that the gaming industry is waking up to the market of disabled veterans with this game and Gears 5 (18+). Hopefully this technology can be mainstreamed...

02:35:55
@Gareth - many thanksI heard there was something similar for PlayStation, and toolkits are available (if you know how...)

02:37:34
Many of our children spoke positively about Xbox but were concerned about the extra costs and said that the best devices were more expensive…same was true of smartphones and devices.

02:37:39
@June, there is also “Blind Legend” which is Pegi 12

02:38:17
@June - Indeed, and I think it shows that these solutions are a great starting point and a platform to build upon, but there is still a lot to be done to make these technologies truly universal and accessible.

02:40:01
The problem with teachers is not (only) the access to tools, as described. But much more the didactics to use these tools. That is lacking all over Europe, as we heard from BIK youth panelists…

02:42:54
It's just a holding slide for this part

02:49:23
i remember the Italian Safer Internet Centre speaking about "emotional education" at a SIF many many years ago and we foudn that approach very interesting. Now thank to Alessandro and to the current Covid situation and corresponding systematic technology mediation of our contact, I have fully understood it. Grazie Alessandro!

02:49:51
I wanted to share a recommendation with everyone…

02:49:52
- PWC and Natterhub thumbnail- Coming soon

02:50:55
Pardon me… sorry. Natterhub is a wonderful tool to use in the classroom to teach online communication and empathy :) It’s designed with real-life experiences and play at it’s core to take away the typical abstract feel of online safety teaching.

03:01:28
There are many free resources to help ensure your documents etc are accessible (like Jaoa said), - eg in Microsoft support, or adobe, etc, which can help SICs. The EU has also started sharing publicly our own resources re publications: see https://op.europa.eu/en/web/accessibility and the different tabs there. The site is not yet fully accessible but there are many useful resources and links there to help produce & check accessible content. Please use!

03:02:41
Happy to share with you a new educational website published in Iceland recently about the Convention on the rights of the child www.barnasattmali.is It has the convention written in a child-friendly way, it has a speaking-device for blind children and is translated into sign language - there is also an English interpretation for parents of foreign origin in Iceland which have children in Iceland.

03:04:12
https://www.specialeffect.org.uk is a UK charity which helps disabled young people get access to adaptive technologies for gaming

03:04:19
and also the child-friendly text in many languages as well as the full text of the CRC in many languages

03:05:36
Thanks @Inga for your valuable insight! Very important to take into account

03:05:53
Thank you!

03:05:56
Yes thank you @Inga !!!

03:09:19
Fantastic session, thank you so much everyone!

03:09:20
thank you

03:09:24
Thank you to all the panellists. I learnt so much.

03:09:27
huge thanks to Laura and to all the young people who took part this morning. We are listening to you!

03:09:53
I will try and add subtitles to the videos I have on our website at Barnardos to be more accessible to all.

03:09:54
+1 to what @June said!

03:10:00
Look at the report site of the Icelandic hotline through the accessibility lense

03:10:15
Do more work to ensure that the child-friendly material we develop is also fully accessible

03:10:26
Share information and good practice examples with my colleagues to promote such approach and probably see something like that in Croatia one day.

03:10:31
Consult with and listen to a diverse range of young people, including children with disabilities

03:10:32
Make sure that any future children’s rights/internet safety projects that I’m involved with always remember diversity, inclusion and accessibility - for all children.

03:10:40
I'll be raising this session at our diversity and inclusion meeting!

03:11:12
I’ll be sharing all of this with colleagues in planning with and for kids

03:11:18
Trying to mainstream more 'inclusion" in the Better Internet for Kids activities, at EU level, but also stimulating MS/Safer Internet Centres to increase their focus on it

03:12:02
Thanks for mentioning the braille bricks Karl - if I had had more time I would have said this as such a brilliant idea for inclusive play. Like so much else re inclusion, it's obvious once someone suggests it.

03:12:05
Keep children and young people in mind when we develop all our resources. Try to provide methodologies, tools that makes the Internet an inclusive place for them as well!

03:12:09
Thanks to all presenters and especially to the young people!

03:12:09
This really is an eye-opener for the importance of consulting all users and focus on inclusion and accessibility of new solutions - with all the opportunities we also get new challenges. Thanks to everyone! Fantastic session ;)

03:12:10
thank you. Very interesting

03:12:19
Thank you all!

03:12:21
Many thanks Karl, great wrap up! Super session with wonderful speakers, especially the young people

03:12:26
It was very impressive, thanks a lot. :-)

03:12:30
Well done karl - great chairing

03:12:48
Tnx Karl

03:12:48
Thanks so much. I learned so much and it was great to have so many young people speaking

03:12:49
Thank you so very much everyone, really encouraging and eye-opening :)

03:12:54
thank you all

03:12:54
Thank you everybody for taking part in this eye-opening and thought-provoking morning session of the SIF. Brilliant Karl, Sarah and team

03:13:18
Focus on improving understanding on how child helplines can make their online resources and information as accessible as possible for children with disabilities.

03:13:50
offer more training on online safety

03:15:07
Integrate what I’ve learned from working with Sunna & others in the BIKyouth panel into future facilitation & privacy projects
